Luc Tuymans to Open Major Solo Show at Palazzo Grassi During 2019 Venice Biennale
Luc Tuymans will present his inaugural solo exhibition in Italy, titled 'La Pelle', at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, curated by Caroline Bourgeois. The exhibition is scheduled from March 24, 2019, to January 6, 2020, coinciding with the 58th Venice Biennale, which takes place from May 11 to November 24, 2019. It showcases 80 pieces created since 1986, along with a site-specific installation. The exhibition's name is inspired by Curzio Malaparte's 1949 book. This marks the eighth installment of Palazzo Grassi's 'Carte Blanche' series, which encourages artists to work closely with curators. Tuymans, a 1958 Mortsel, Belgium native residing in Antwerp, is recognized for his innovative approach to painting since the mid-1980s. His art examines historical narratives through media-derived images, crafting an 'authentic forgery' of reality. Recently, he curated 'Sanguine. Luc Tuymans on Baroque' at Fondazione Prada in Milan, open until February 25, 2019. Previous exhibitions at Palazzo Grassi include 'Dancing with Myself' (2018), featuring artists like Maurizio Cattelan and Cindy Sherman, and Damien Hirst's 'Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable', which drew 360,000 visitors. Since 2006, François Pinault's foundation has owned Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, linking Venice to the global art community.
