Luc Tuymans Curates Baroque Exhibition at Fondazione Prada Milan

Fondazione Prada in Milan presents 'Sanguine. Luc Tuymans on Baroque' from October 18, 2018 to February 25, 2019. Belgian painter Luc Tuymans curates this exhibition exploring Baroque art from its origins to the 21st century. The show originated in Antwerp during the 'Year of Rubens' before expanding for its Milan presentation. Works span from 17th century masters like Pierre Paul Rubens and Francisco de Zurbarán to contemporary artists including Jake and Dinos Chapman, Bruce Nauman, and Berlinde de Bruyckere. The exhibition title references blood's dual symbolism of life and violence, connecting to Baroque themes of power and sacrifice. Displayed pieces range from Cornelis de Vos's 1620 portrait to Edward Kienholz's 1968-69 environment 'Five Car Stud' and On Kawara's 1995 'Thanatophanies'. The curation creates dialogues between historical and modern works, such as pairing Marlène Dumas's 1995 'Black Mary Magdalene' with Zurbarán's 1650-55 'Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian'. Other featured artists include Lili Dujourie, Jan Vercruysse, Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen, and Francisco Goya. The exhibition examines Baroque spatial concepts and their contemporary resonances through approximately 80 works.
