Lubbock's First Friday Art Trail Draws Thousands Monthly, Faces Growing Pains
Now in its 22nd year, Lubbock's First Friday Art Trail (FFAT) has expanded significantly, attracting thousands to the downtown arts district each month from its humble beginnings. The event, initiated in August 2004 by the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA), saw LHUCA distribute 6,000 wristbands in October 2025 before they ran out. Early contributors included Steve Teeters of St. Eligius Studio, who hosted gatherings with pozole and wine, while Larry Simmons' Tornado Gallery welcomed over 1,400 visitors in a single evening. The Charles Adams Studio Project (CASP), established by Charles Adams in 2010, introduced galleries and live/work spaces. LHUCA Plaza's opening in 2016 enhanced venue connectivity and attendance, which reached 42,000 in 2017 and soared to 65,800 by 2023. Although the pandemic prompted a virtual format in 2020, in-person events resumed by mid-2021. In 2024, a City Councilmember's objection to LGBTQ+ content led to a temporary funding cut, but public backlash and nearly 60 testimonies reinstated it. Challenges persist, such as crowd management and decreasing participation at peripheral venues. As of January 2026, the Buddy Holly Center has withdrawn from the monthly event. LHUCA Executive Director Lindsey Maestri is contemplating how to align crowd management with the event's goals, while artist Josue del Fresco, now a CASP resident, underscores the importance of community engagement.
