Lubaina Himid Wins 2023 Maria Lassnig Prize

British artist Lubaina Himid has received the fourth mid-career award from the Maria Lassnig Foundation, which includes a €50,000 prize and her first solo exhibition in Asia at the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. Notably, Himid made waves in 2017 as the first Black woman to win the Turner Prize. In 2018, she was recognized with a CBE, and her work was exhibited at Tate Modern in 2021. Philip Tinari, the director of UCCA, praised her for her "bold formal innovations and trenchant historical explorations," highlighting her significance in contemporary art. The jury consisted of Tinari, Peter Pakesch, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Matthias Mühling, Cao Fei, Guo Xi, and Patrick Rhine.
