Lubaina Himid to Represent Great Britain at 2026 Venice Biennale with Installation Exploring Belonging

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Lubaina Himid has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026, where she will present large, multi-panel paintings alongside works made from found objects. Her installation, which draws on her themes of belonging, will include a sound piece created by Magda Stawarska. Himid seeks to establish a space for profound reflection, allowing personal narratives to engage with the art. Originally from Zanzibar, Tanzania, she has spent the last seventy years in Britain and considers William Hogarth a major influence. Despite facing historical obstacles, Himid underscores the importance of British artists. She dedicated five to six hours daily for approximately ten months in preparation. The Biennale will take place from 9 May to 22 November 2026, with ArtReview offering daily insights leading up to the event.
