Lu Yang's DOKU The Illusion at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia
Lu Yang presents DOKU The Illusion, a solo exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia, running from May 8 to October 4, 2026. Curated by Claire Staebler, the show coincides with the 61st Venice Biennale and the 20th anniversary of the Louis Vuitton Spaces. Part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton's Hors-les-murs program, the exhibition features a new video installation—the fourth chapter of the DOKU series begun in 2019—alongside original sculptures. The film combines live-action footage shot on Japan's Izu Peninsula with AI-generated imagery, following the virtual avatar DOKU, based on the artist's own face. The installation transforms the venue into a cybernetic sanctuary with a mirrored ceiling, two Buddha sculptures holding the wheel of life, and a monumental LED screen. The soundtrack blends hip-hop, piano, and traditional music, reflecting the Biennale theme 'In Minor Keys'. Lu Yang, represented by SOCIÉTÉ, explores Buddhist philosophy, digital reality, and hybrid identities through manga, video games, and anime aesthetics.
