Louvre exhibition showcases Martin Schongauer's influence on Renaissance masters

An exhibition at the Louvre in Paris, featuring approximately one hundred pieces by Martin Schongauer, who was born around 1445 in Colmar, will be on display until 2026. This showcase presents both paintings and engravings that reflect Schongauer's exceptional craftsmanship and his impact on Renaissance figures such as Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt. Although he holds great importance in art history, Schongauer remains relatively obscure. The exhibition underscores his engraving expertise, which established new benchmarks and gained widespread recognition during his lifetime. It also explores his influence in the shift from late Gothic to Renaissance art. Schongauer passed away in 1491, concluding a period of innovation, yet his legacy continued to inspire future artists.
