Louvre and Snapchat expand AR experience to six masterpieces from February 2026
Following a successful 2023 pilot focused on Ancient Egyptian artifacts, the Louvre Museum in Paris and Snap's AR Studio in Paris are expanding their augmented reality initiative to the entire museum. Starting February 18, 2026, Snapchat users will be able to scan QR codes on labels to unlock digital explorations of six masterpieces: the Code of Hammurabi, the Bust of Akhenaten, the Portrait of Anna of Cleves, the Kore of Samos, the Four Captives, and the Rustic Figurines. The AR experiences, developed in collaboration with Louvre curators using archival materials and scientific references, reveal lost forms, materials, and colors, decode artistic techniques, and allow novel exploration of the collections. Gautier Verbeke, Director of Audience Development and Public Engagement at the Louvre, stated that the partnership aims to make shared heritage more accessible through visionary and innovative formats aligned with contemporary digital habits. The AR Studio also created a global experience accessible via Snapchat's Lens Carousel or by scanning banners around the museum, featuring animated marble blocks that guide users to discover 3D artworks and their locations within museum departments.
