Louvre Acquires First Video Work for Permanent Collection
The Louvre in Paris has acquired its first video work for its permanent collection: 'Les 4 temps' (The 4 Seasons) by French-Algerian artist Mohamed Bourouissa. The piece, on view in the Salle de la Chapelle from October 22, 2025 to January 19, 2026, centers on the Tuileries Gardens—created in 1564 for Catherine de' Medici, now a UNESCO World Heritage site under Louvre stewardship since 2005. The video also references the Les 4 Temps shopping center in La Défense, where Bourouissa grew up. The acquisition results from a 2024 collaboration in which Bourouissa managed the Louvre's Instagram account for 52 weeks, posting weekly videos documenting the gardens through the seasons. The series garnered millions of views, and Bourouissa later transformed it into an autonomous work, composing its soundtrack by recording plant vibrations. Born in Blida, Algeria in 1978 and based in France, Bourouissa is known for exploring identity, periphery, violence, and collective memory. His work has been shown at Palais de Tokyo, Centre Pompidou, LaM Lille, and Musée d'Art moderne de Paris. He was a finalist for the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2018) and Prix Pictet (2017), and won the 2020 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for 'Libre échange' at Rencontres d'Arles. His works are held by MoMA New York, LACMA Los Angeles, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Maison européenne de la photographie Paris.
