Louvre Abu Dhabi Opens: A Titan's Achievement with Lights and Shadows

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has opened on Saadiyat Island, marking a new chapter for the world's most famous museum brand. The museum, designed by Jean Nouvel, spans 87,000 square meters across 55 white buildings reminiscent of a medina, topped with a dome that filters light and heat. It houses 620 works, including 300 loans from French museums, arranged chronologically from antiquity to globalization. The partnership, signed in 2007, allows Abu Dhabi to use the Louvre name for 30 years and six months, with France providing loans, curators, and four annual exhibitions for 15 years. The museum aims to be a bridge between East and West, a point emphasized by Louvre president Jean-Luc Martinez. However, the project has faced criticism over worker conditions, with Human Rights Watch reporting exploitation. Director Manuel Rabaté claims Western standards were met, and the museum employs mostly local staff. Hissa Al Dhaheri, a 32-year-old Emirati woman, serves as deputy director. The museum is part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, which will also include the Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and other institutions.
