Louisiana Museum in Denmark Hosts Pussy Riot Exhibition
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Fredensborg, Denmark, is presenting an exhibition on the feminist activist collective Pussy Riot, running until January 14, 2024. The show documents the group's decade-long history through photos and videos. Pussy Riot formed in Moscow in 2011 as a punk protest group, known for provocative performances against Vladimir Putin's authoritarian regime. Their most famous action occurred on February 21, 2012, when five members staged a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour titled "Mother of God: Drive Putin Away." This led to the arrest of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, whom Amnesty International designated as prisoners of conscience. The exhibition also covers the 2015 video "I Can't Breathe," referencing Eric Garner's death, and the 2016 track "Make America Great Again" featuring a Trump figure. In 2018, during the FIFA World Cup final, members dressed as police invaded the field to protest illegal arrests. Tolokonnikova, previously part of the art group Vojna, spoke at TED2023 about her activism. The collective's motto is "Anyone can be Pussy Riot." In 2022, they raised about $7 million for Ukraine. The exhibition celebrates their role as a symbol of resistance against authoritarianism.
