Louise Nevelson retrospective opens in Ascona, Switzerland
From October 2, 2022 to January 8, 2023, the Museo Comunale di Ascona in Ticino, Switzerland, presents a major retrospective of Ukrainian-born American sculptor Louise Nevelson (1899–1988). Organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Marconi in Milan, the exhibition features around 80 works spanning Nevelson's career, from rare drawings of the 1930s to her monumental assemblage sculptures of the 1960s and 1970s, alongside over 60 collages. A section of historical and documentary material includes the full screening of Dale Schierholt's film "Nevelson: Awareness in the Fourth Dimension." The show traces Nevelson's eclectic practice, which engaged with Dadaism, Cubism, Abstraction, and Metaphysical art, and her use of recycled materials. It also highlights her struggle against gender prejudices of her time, as she asserted the feminine quality of her work. The retrospective is presented in Switzerland, a country that broke its century-long neutrality to express solidarity with Ukraine, Nevelson's birthplace.
