Louise Nevelson Exhibition Opens in Newly Restored Procuratie Vecchie During Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Procuratie Vecchie, a historic building overlooking Piazza San Marco in Venice, opens to the public for the first time in 500 years following a major restoration by David Chipperfield Architects Milan. Coinciding with this opening, the exhibition "Louise Nevelson. Persistence" runs from April 23 to September 11, 2022, at the second floor of the Procuratie Vecchie. Organized by the Louise Nevelson Foundation and recognized as an official Collateral Event of the 59th Venice Biennale, it marks the largest and most comprehensive survey of the revolutionary American artist in Italy since 2013. The show spans nine rooms and features iconic large-scale painted wood sculptures, white sculptures such as the multi-column installation "Dawn's Presence – Three" (1975), and rare gold works like "The Golden Pearl" (1962). Collages and sculptural assemblages are displayed alongside large-scale pieces, highlighting Nevelson's use of unconventional materials including raw wood, metal, cardboard, sandpaper, and aluminum foil. The exhibition returns Nevelson's work to Venice sixty years after she represented the United States at the American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale.
