Louise Bourgeois's Fabric Works Revealed in Final Exhibition Curated with Germano Celant

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The final exhibition that Louise Bourgeois engaged in prior to her passing, titled Louise Bourgeois: The Fabric Works, features abstract fabric drawings from her last ten years. Curated by Germano Celant, along with Bourgeois and her assistant Jerry Gorovoy, the show presents previously unseen pieces, chosen as a visual diary. It premiered in summer 2010 at the Magazzino del Sale in Venice, a 16th-century building reimagined by Renzo Piano, before moving to Hauser & Wirth's new location in London in October. Celant's focus on Bourgeois's lesser-known fabric works revealed their surprising freshness and intensity. These pieces, rooted in her family’s clothing and her early experiences in tapestry restoration, convey personal narratives through abstract forms, often incorporating geometric shapes and occasional spider motifs. The exhibition features a hundred fabric drawings alongside sculptures, enhancing its communicative power, and will be on display at Hauser & Wirth, London, until 18 December 2010.
