Louis Calaferte's Carnets IX and Correspondence with Georges Piroué Published

publication · 2026-04-23

Two books by or about French writer Louis Calaferte have been released: 'Ecriture, Carnets IX, 1985-86' (éd. L'Arpenteur – Gallimard) and 'Louis Calaferte / Georges Piroué : correspondance' (Ed. Hesse). The Carnets explore Calaferte's reflections on writing, art, and his own works in progress. In 1984, his text 'Septentrion' was reissued after more than twenty years of silence, having been banned in 1963. 'Londoniennes' followed in 1985. The Carnets also discuss works by contemporaries such as Portuguese poet Torga. Calaferte cites Musil: 'I write my books as if there were no market.' The correspondence with Georges Piroué, author and literary advisor at Denoël, covers literary analysis, recent enthusiasms, and rejections. The exchange became heated over 'Incarnation', which Piroué felt went too far in exploring intimacy and childhood scatology. Patrick Amine reviews both books as rich and superb, far from ambient noise and stupidity.
