Louis Bouwmeesterplein: Mixed-Use Urban Development in Tilburg
A new mixed-use residential and cultural complex, Louis Bouwmeesterplein, is underway in Tilburg, Netherlands. Designed by De Bouwmeesters—a collaboration between HILBERINKBOSCH architecten, Werkstatt, and Orange Architects—the project integrates housing, public parking, creative workspaces, retail, and a rooftop park. Commissioned by developer BPD | Bouwfonds Gebiedsontwikkeling and based on an urban plan by Wissing, the development sits adjacent to the municipal theater and Zomerpark. The design draws on Tilburg's industrial heritage and textile history, using brick construction and a color palette developed with local artist Sigrid Calon. The complex comprises three volumes: Stadsblok, Parkblok, and Maakblok, each with distinct architectural identities. A key feature is "De Schoorsteen," a vegetated public staircase referencing a former factory chimney. Sustainability follows the "World We Value" principle, focusing on resource efficiency, healthy living, and community value. The project aims to strengthen the green network and connect the rooftop park to Zomerpark via public routes and stairs.
