Lotus Kang's 'The Face of Desire is Loss' at Bvlgari's Venice Biennale Pavilion

exhibition · 2026-05-07

Artist Lotus Kang presents 'The Face of Desire is Loss' at the Bvlgari pavilion in Venice, part of the 2025 Venice Art Biennale. The pavilion, titled after a book by poet Lara Mimosa Montes, features Kang's signature use of industrial materials like super joists, rubber, and tarp. The façade of Spazio Esedra in the Giardini is covered with 35mm unfixed film shot in Korean mud flats, creating a light-dependent filter. Inside, sculptures include plaster casts of crying baby birds and wrapped tatami mats. Bvlgari, which will sponsor the next three Biennales, commissioned Kang for her 'quiet intensity' and material exploration. Kang, known for her Whitney Biennial 2023 installation 'In Cascades' and a Chisenhale solo show, describes her work as resisting single meanings. The exhibition runs from May 9 to November 22.
