Lotta Antonsson's Collages Confront the Male Gaze at Fotografiska Stockholm

exhibition · 2026-04-30

Swedish artist Lotta Antonsson's exhibition 'I Am Everything' at Fotografiska Stockholm runs until 29 November 2026. The show features collages that layer gemstones, crystals, and seashells onto vintage images from 1968–1978 to critique the commodification and objectification of the female body. Works like 'Seashell Face #100' (2021) replace models' eyes with clam shells to return the viewer's gaze, while 'Ali' (2024) uses milky quartz fragments as fang-like teeth. Antonsson draws on influences from Eileen Agar, Hannah Höch, and Dora Maar. The exhibition includes an 'active bodies' series with freestanding works like 'Jennifer' (2021), depicting a woman in a warrior pose. Antonsson, who studied photography, began incorporating shells into her art 15 years ago when organic matter was uncommon in contemporary art. The works are presented on hot pink plinths with mirrored surfaces and shell curtains, evoking 1960s interior design.
