Lost Mantegna Deposition Discovered at Pompeii Sanctuary, to Debut at Vatican Museums

The 'Deposition of Christ,' a painting by Andrea Mantegna that had been lost for centuries, has been found at the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompeii. Created in the late 15th or early 16th century, it was originally commissioned by the Aragonese court and was recorded by Pietro Summonte in 1524. After disappearing from historical records, it was rediscovered in 2022 by Stefano De Mieri, who identified it online. Its authenticity was verified by experts Barbara Jatta, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, and Massimo Osanna. The artwork will be on display at the Vatican Museums starting March 20, 2025, before returning to Pompeii for permanent exhibition after its conclusion in late May 2025.
