Lost Art Press Releases Tool List for 'Smalls' Woodworking Projects

Lost Art Press has published a guide listing the tools needed to build the 18 small projects featured in their new pocket book 'Smalls.' The book, designed to use up offcuts from scrap bins, includes plans for quick handmade gifts. The tool list is organized into categories: saws (band saw, coping saw, backsaws, table saw), striking tools (mallet, hammers), engraving (Crucible engraving tool), marking and measuring (compass, sliding bevel, combination squares, protractor), planes (block, jack, smoothing, skew rabbet, router, plow, beading), chisels/gouges (1/4" and 1/2" chisels, carving gouge), shaping and finishing (rasp, sandpaper, sanding sponge), and miscellaneous (drill/driver, drill press, pin nailer, tenon cutter, drawknife, spokeshave, auger bit, router, adhesive spray). The authors, Christopher Schwarz and Kale Vogt, emphasize that not all tools are required; woodworkers can choose from three paths: using a small band saw for all cuts, hand tools with backsaws and coping saw, or a table saw for straight cuts and joinery. For striking, a 16 oz. hammer suffices. The engraving tool is only for the six-board chest project. A combination square is the most versatile marking tool. Only one general-purpose plane is needed; joinery planes can be skipped if using a table saw. A 1/4" chisel is the minimum. The stool project requires a tenon cutter, drawknife, spokeshave, and auger bit. Adhesive spray helps attach patterns.
