Los Angeles Fires Reveal Stark Inequalities Between Pacific Palisades and Altadena

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

The wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January underscored significant social and economic inequalities. Pacific Palisades, founded in 1922 by Reverend Charles Holmes Scott, boasts a median income of approximately $200,000 and is predominantly 82% white. Conversely, Altadena serves as a refuge for Black professionals who have historically faced barriers to property ownership. A study from UCLA revealed a connection between the Eaton fire's perimeter and redlining maps from 1939, indicating that Black households in Altadena were 1.3 times more likely to experience severe damage. Journalist Lynell George referred to her neighborhood as 'completely decimated', while sculptor Kelly Akashi, who lost both her home and studio, expressed a need for 'housing'. The fires obliterated landmarks, and despite fire being regarded as an 'equal-opportunity destroyer', Altadena lacks adequate recovery resources. Notably, President Trump only visited the Palisades.
