Loris Gréaud's Buried Sculpture Park Opens at Casa Wabi in Oaxaca
At Casa Wabi, a foundation on the Oaxaca coast in Mexico, French artist Loris Gréaud has inaugurated The Underground Sculpture Park, a permanent installation where twenty iconic artworks were destroyed and buried along vegetated paths. Gréaud, known for his 2008-11 project Cellar Door at Palais de Tokyo, selected the pieces, demolished them, and interred the remains forever. The park remains hidden from view; only benches marking the opening date are placed above the burial sites, inviting visitors to sit and contemplate the invisible works beneath their feet. The concept encourages imagination and reflection on visibility and the fate of art. Casa Wabi was founded by Bosco Sodi, designed by architect Tadao Ando in 2014, with a 27-hectare garden by landscape designer Alberto Kalach aimed at cataloging local species and promoting environmental education. The garden features palms, cacti, succulents, and the nearly extinct guayacan tree, once used for medicinal purposes, whose survival is a priority.
