Loris Gréaud's 2013 Triple Exhibition Blitz Across Venice, Paris

exhibition · 2026-04-24

French artist Loris Gréaud (born 1979) had a major year in 2013 with three simultaneous exhibitions. At Punta della Dogana in Venice, as part of the group show "Prima Materia" at Fondation Pinault, he installed "Does the Angle between two Walls have a Happy Ending?" — a chapel-like space with blinding light and fluctuating electricity, evoking a post-cataclysmic cult site where apes were worshipped. The title references author J.G. Ballard. At Centre Pompidou in Paris, his work [I] featured a 14-meter spiral metal staircase rotating every 40 seconds, with a diver repeatedly climbing and jumping off, creating a perpetual loop that negates the idea of ending. Under the Louvre Pyramid, the other part of [I] was a monumental sculpture over 10 meters tall, based on a 3D scan of Michelangelo's "Rebelle captif," draped in black matte cloth and left dirty to appear ancient. Gréaud described the project as touching on the Gesamtkunstwerk concept. Earlier in 2013, he also showed at Galerie Yvon Lambert and screened his film "The Snorks – A Concert for Creatures" starring Charlotte Rampling and David Lynch, which explored micro-cellular organisms excited by rap music. The film and exhibitions ran from May 30, 2013 to December 31, 2014 at Punta della Dogana; June 19 to July 15, 2013 at Centre Pompidou; and June 19, 2013 to January 2014 at the Louvre.
