Lori Ellison's 2012 Exhibition at McKenzie Showed Drawings and Paintings Contrasting Obsession with Meditative Craft

opinion-review · 2026-04-22

From January 5 to February 11, 2012, McKenzie hosted an exhibition featuring Lori Ellison's ballpoint drawings and gouache paintings, emphasizing their interrelations. The drawings, which had been kept in storage, were exhibited at 511 West 25th Street in New York City. They incorporated biomorphic shapes and a gothic aesthetic, evoking a sense of claustrophobia. Ellison's gouaches, produced in 2011, utilized dark colors on a lighter background, with three untitled works in purple, green, and blue showcasing a triangular motif. Influenced by tribal, folk, and religious art, her style drew inspiration from Mondrian and others. After her passing on August 1, 2015, a 2012 review was reissued in her honor. She left behind her husband, Lawrence Swan, and a family of artists.
