Loretta Fahrenholz's film Ditch Plains subverts post-apocalyptic genre with contemporary urban critique

artist · 2026-04-20

Loretta Fahrenholz's 2013 film Ditch Plains reimagines post-apocalyptic cinema, blending fiction with documentary to address social issues in urban America. The work features zombie dancers in New York, portrayed as black, stylish, and acrobatic, who later voice real encounters with police, juxtaposed with footage from Hurricane Sandy. Fahrenholz, who lives in New York and Berlin, has exhibited at Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis, Kunsthalle Zurich, Galerie Buchholz in Cologne, Ludlow 38 in New York, Project Native Informant in London, and Reena Spaulings Fine Art in New York. The film was highlighted in a group exhibition in Berlin. ArtReview published this feature in its January & February 2016 issue, selected by Omer Fast. Ditch Plains draws parallels to 1970s films like The Omega Man (1971) and Escape From New York (1981), which reflected white anxiety and urban decay. Fahrenholz's approach subtly connects themes of Black Lives Matter and climate change without breaking its performative illusion.
