Lorenzo Scotto di Luzio's Floral Paintings at Vistamare, Pescara

Lorenzo Scotto di Luzio (born 1972, Naples) presents forty new works from 2023–2024 at Galleria Vistamare in Pescara in the exhibition 'Tout le monde se fout des fleurs'. The paintings evoke the poetry of Sandro Penna, translating his verse 'un fiore chiama l’altro' into visual form. Scotto di Luzio avoids depicting modern anxieties, instead creating an idealized, dreamlike world where nature consoles the viewer. Scenes of summer downpours and sunny seaside walks are populated by female figures that humanize nature and merge humanity with the primitive environment. The artist's technical virtuosity is evident in compositions recalling early 20th-century painting, yet he employs modern color effects in both landscapes and still lifes. Objects such as vases, lamps, boxes, bottles, fields, trees, roofs, and walls form a seemingly subdued discourse that reveals a wide range of emotions. Curators Benedetta Spalletti and Lodovica Busiri Vici note that the floral paintings reinvent compositional values through vivid tones, faint hues, or stark black and white, oscillating between cultured and naïve painting. Traces of human presence—a solitary cigarette in an ashtray, a notebook, a forgotten newspaper on a tram—are captured as fragments of a personal novel.
