Lorenzo Quinn's 'Building Bridges' Returns to Venice Biennale
Despite lacking a significant artistic curriculum and being ignored by critics and curators, sculptor Lorenzo Quinn (Rome, 1966) has once again installed his oversized white hands in Venice during the 2019 Biennale. After his 2017 debut in the disastrous Italian Pavilion curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, Quinn's hands emerged from the Grand Canal holding up the Ca' Sagredo hotel, which hosted an exhibition of his small sculptures. In 2019, he presents 'Building Bridges': six pairs of arms made in Valencia, transported by ship to Genoa and then to Venice with 18 trucks, measuring 15 meters high and 20 meters long, located at the Arsenale Nord basins. The opening featured a concert by Andrea Bocelli, a gala dinner with a scale model of the sculpture, children waving flags of all countries, and Instagram pianist Lola Astanova. Quinn is the son of actor Anthony Quinn and is represented by hyper-commercial galleries, including one inside Harrods. The work is not part of the official Biennale but is a public commission supported by the mayor of Venice.
