Lorenzo Mattotti’s Patagonia sketchbook exhibited at Mutty in Castiglione delle Stiviere

A complete edition of Lorenzo Mattotti’s Patagonia travel sketchbook, originally drawn in 2003 during a road trip to Tierra del Fuego with Argentine writer Jorge Zentner, is on display at Mutty in Castiglione delle Stiviere, Mantua, until November 28. Curated by Melania Gazzotti, the show features silkscreen prints of charcoal drawings on Nepalese paper, presented in an intimate, minimalist setting. Mattotti, who previously created the travel book Vietnam for Louis Vuitton in 2014, describes the Patagonian landscape as a 360-degree, musical experience—a melody of lines and colors that he sought to capture on paper. The exhibition also includes a second notebook of quicker sketches and notes. In an interview, Mattotti discusses his synesthetic approach, comparing the landscape’s harmony to abstract music, and his collaboration with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Paris on a production of Hansel and Gretel. He also reflects on his animated film The Famous Invasion of the Bears, based on Dino Buzzati’s novel, noting the five-year project’s challenges and the influence of Buzzati’s graphic style. The exhibition is organized by Mutty, a space known for refined projects, and the accompanying catalog is published by Lazy Dog.
