Lorenzo Mattotti's New Yorker Covers on View in NYC

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Italian Cultural Institute in New York presents Lorenzo Mattotti's original pastels for 32 New Yorker covers, along with unpublished sketches and images for fashion, culture, and current affairs. Curated by Melania Gazzotti, the exhibition runs until March 8. It was introduced by director Giorgio van Straten and Françoise Mouly, the legendary art director of the New Yorker, who worked with Mattotti since the Raw magazine days. The show includes narrative captions by graphic designer Francesco Izzo and a catalog published by #logosedizioni, featuring trilingual texts explaining each drawing's genesis. The catalog's graphic design by Francesco Ceccarelli of Bunker Design mirrors the New Yorker's format—same size and three-column text layout—to pay homage to the magazine. The exhibition marks the first time Mattotti's original cover artworks are shown in New York.
