Lorenzo Mattotti's 400-Work Retrospective at Villa Manin
Villa Manin in Codroipo hosts 'Sconfini', a major retrospective of Italian illustrator-painter Lorenzo Mattotti, curated by David Rosenberg with Giovanna Durì. The exhibition presents 400 works spanning Mattotti's career from the 1970s to recent productions, including comics, literary illustrations (Pinocchio, Hansel and Gretel, Pavilion on the Dunes), posters for the Cannes Film Festival, collaborations with Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Steven Soderbergh, and contributions to The New Yorker, Le Monde, Vanity Fair, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and La Repubblica. Organized by the Ente Regionale Patrimonio Culturale del Friuli Venezia Giulia with Fondation Hélène & Édouard Leclerc and Fondazione CRUP, the show is an expanded version of a previous French iteration. The theme 'absence of a border' ties together works in varied techniques—ink, acrylic on Nepalese paper, pencil portraits—and references Expressionists Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch, Francis Bacon, as well as Giorgio de Chirico, David Hockney, and Franco Fontana. The exhibition runs until March 19, 2017.
