Lorenzo Lotto's Rediscovered Wood Inlay at Accademia Carrara

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A newly attributed wood inlay by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting the Creation, is the centerpiece of 'Un Lotto riscoperto' at Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. Previously thought a copy, the intarsia is now proposed as autograph, with Lotto having drawn and profiled it himself. The work belongs to a set of two inlays (the other being the Annunciation) that historical sources confirm were directly profiled by Lotto as exemplars for the choir of Santa Maria Maggiore, executed by Giovanni Francesco Capoferri. The exhibition includes loans from national and international institutions: the altarpiece from Santa Maria Assunta in Celana (1527), the Two Apostles (1510-12) from Brera, the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (1524) from Palazzo Barberini, and the presumed Self-Portrait (1510-13) from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Beyond the museum, the project extends to a city-wide itinerary: the MIA Foundation offers visits to the Santa Maria Maggiore choir, and the Bernareggi Foundation runs the Lorenzo Lotto Tour, including the museum's Trinity (1520), the churches of Santo Spirito, San Bernardino, and San Bartolomeo. Proceeds will fund the reconstruction of the Cola Filotesio museum in Amatrice.
