Loop Barcelona 2019: Video Art Confronts Global Disintegration
The 17th edition of Loop, a fair dedicated to film and video art, took place at the Hotel Almanac in Barcelona from November 19 to 21, 2019. Forty galleries exhibited works that engage with the disintegration of the world, addressing themes such as migration, anthropocene, neoliberalism, war, dehumanization, and dystopia, while also exploring beauty, myth-making, and transcendence. Notable works include Nikolaj Larsen's video on migration (awarded the 2019 Honorary Prize), Claudia Martínez Garay's critique of patriarchal structures (winner of the 1st Loop Prize 2019), and pieces by Taus Makhacheva, Broomberg & Chanarin, Adrian Melis, Romain Kronenberg, Maria Elena, Adrian Balseca, Louis-Cyprien Rials, Yelena Popova, Gabriel Abrantes, Rory Pilgrim, Peyman Hooshmandzadeh, Polina Kanis, Maija Tammi, Aapo Huhta, Arent Weevers, Thao Nguyen Phan, Pedro Vaz, Cecilia Bengolea, Athi-Patra Ruga, Hamza Halloubi, Radouan Zeghidour, Vendula Knopová, Agnieszka Polska, Laure Prouvost, Shai Dror, Hans Op de Beeck, Veronika Szendrő, Mathilde ter Heijne, and Hector Zamora. The fair also featured a work by Basim Magdy envisioning a future ruled by animals sending philosophical texts.
