Longlati Foundation Marks Seventh Anniversary with Continued Cultural Mission
The Longlati Foundation, co-founded by investor David Su and artist Chen Zihao, celebrates its seventh anniversary this year. Established to support emerging Chinese voices and recalibrate recognition of women's art globally, the foundation opened its Shanghai project space in 2020 during the pandemic to promote cultural exchange. Over thirty solo and group exhibitions have since positioned Shanghai as an axis of critical artistic thinking. Early shows included Tala Madani's introspections and a group exhibition with Derrick Adams, Amoako Boafo, and Vaughn Spann. The foundation's collection initially focused on historical female artists like Judy Chicago and Yayoi Kusama, later turning to a new generation including Tschabalala Self, Hu Xiaoyuan, Christina Ay Tjoe, Ma Qiusha, and Liang Yuanwei. Its debut project, Call and Response, echoed the 2002 Lugu Lake Project, where Chinese women artists responded to the question 'What if women ruled the world?' Artist residencies organized around 'Support, Practice, Transformation' have hosted Su Yu-Xin, Zhang Yibei, and Li Muhua. Commissioned works include Ma Qiusha's The Mirror [-scape] of Your Skin (2022) and recent acquisitions by Christina Quarles. The foundation aims to support the new, practice with purpose, and transform through interrogation over the next five years.
