Lonely Planet's 2026 List: Six Global Creative Destinations

Lonely Planet has released its 2026 list of the world's most creative towns and cities, featuring six destinations across India, Nepal, France, Indonesia, Japan, and Uzbekistan. The list highlights places where creativity is embedded in daily life, from Shantiniketan in India, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1919 as an art school without walls, to Grasse in France, a global center for perfume production since the 16th century. Other destinations include Patan in Nepal, known for Newari metalwork and paubha painting; Yogyakarta in Indonesia, where batik and gamelan traditions thrive under royal patronage; Kanazawa in Japan, blending contemporary art with geisha culture; and Bukhara in Uzbekistan, which hosted its inaugural biennial in 2025. The list emphasizes that these creative practices are living traditions, not museum pieces, and suggests timing visits around festivals or harvests for the most vivid experiences. Notable events include the Poush Mela in Shantiniketan in December, the rose harvest in Grasse in May, and the next Bukhara Biennial scheduled for September through November 2027. UNESCO recognition is highlighted for several sites: Santiniketan as a World Heritage Site in 2023, Grasse's olfactory know-how in 2018, and Indonesian batik as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
