London's Tulip Tower Gets Green Light for Construction
The City of London Planning committee has approved the construction of the Tulip Tower, a 305-meter-high observation tower designed by Foster + Partners for the J. Safra Group. Located near the iconic Gherkin at 30 St Mary Axe, the tower will feature a glass viewing platform, transparent walkways, internal glass slides, rotating capsules, a sky bar, and restaurants with 360-degree views. The project is projected to generate nearly £1 billion in economic value for London by 2045, create 460 full-time construction jobs and 600 permanent positions, and provide free access for 40,000 state school children. The building will use zero-combustion heating and cooling, integrated photovoltaic cells, and high-performance glazing to minimize energy consumption. Public consultations included 11 exhibitions between December 2018 and March 2019, and a ComRes survey found two-thirds of London adults consider the tower an interesting addition to the skyline, with 69% believing it will boost the city's cultural appeal. Construction could begin in 2020 with completion expected in 2025, pending final approval.
