London's Garden Bridge project halted by new mayor Sadiq Khan

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

London's Garden Bridge, a pedestrian garden bridge designed by Thomas Heatherwick, has been halted by new mayor Sadiq Khan until all £175 million in funding is secured. The project, which aimed to create a 367-meter green link across the Thames between Covent Garden and the South Bank, had already received £60 million in public funds. Khan's decision follows a demand from Transport for London for £3 million to reinforce Temple station, which would support the bridge's northern end. The mayor's office stated a commitment to making the project more open and transparent, criticizing the previous administration's procedures. The bridge, featuring 45 tree species, shrubs, and flowers, was inspired by New York's High Line. Heatherwick, known for the UK Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai, the 2012 Olympic cauldron, and the new Routemaster buses, had hoped private funding would cover costs. The project's future remains uncertain as full funding is unlikely.
