London's Elizabeth Line Opens with Major Public Art Commissions
The Elizabeth Line, a new metro-railway line in London, opened nearly four years late at a cost of £19 billion. Dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II for her Platinum Jubilee, the Crossrail East-West line connects Heathrow Airport and Reading to Abbey Wood and Shenfield via over 100 km of track, adding ten new stations. Through the Crossrail Art Foundation, it features the most ambitious permanent public art commission in London in the last century, with works integrated into station design from the outset. Sonia Boyce created 'Newham Trackside Wall,' a nearly two-kilometer-long artwork along tracks in Newham depicting stories of East End residents. Chantal Joffe installed two-meter aluminum portraits at Whitechapel station. Spencer Finch's 'A Cloud Index' spans a 2,300 sqm glass roof at Paddington, featuring over 30 cloud types inspired by John Constable's sky studies. Simon Periton's gem and diamond motifs at Farringdon reference the area's jewelry trade. Douglas Gordon's video at Tottenham Court Road recounts his arrival in 1980s Soho. Richard Wright's gold-leaf geometric mural adorns the ceiling above escalators. Michal Rovner's 'Transitions' at Canary Wharf shows moving figures on a large screen. Future installations include Conrad Shawcross's bronze sculpture at Liverpool Street, Yayoi Kusama's steel spheres in 2023, and Darren Almond's projected number field at Bond Street.
