London Galleries Present Diverse Exhibitions During Frieze Week 2018
Multiple London galleries launched exhibitions during Frieze Week 2018. Studio Voltaire transformed into a memorial chapel honoring victims of homophobia, featuring pen drawings commemorating Allen R. Schindler Jr., Marsha P. Johnson, Xulhaz Mannan, and Oscar Wilde, while offering the space for LGBT ceremonies over six months. The Store hosted Strange Days, an immersive video exhibition featuring 21 international artists including Camille Henrot, Daria Martin, Wong Ping, and John Akomfrah, whose Vertigo Sea installation explored oceanic violence. At the Curve, Francis Upritchard presented Wetwang Slack, sculptures blending fashion, craft, and archaeology with materials like polymer, bronze, leather, and Balata rubber from Brazil. Richard Saltoun Gallery exhibited Eliseo Mattiacci's 1980–81 installation of 58 aluminium volutes, marking his first UK solo show. Chisenhale Gallery featured Lawrence Abu Hamdan's sound installation about Saydnaya prison in Syria, complemented by his video Walled Unwalled at Tate Modern. Kunstraum displayed Anna Hulačová's surreal sculptures combining marquetry and concrete. These shows opened as London's art fairs concluded in October 2018.
