London Design Museum Announces 2019 Exhibition Program
The Design Museum in London, named European Museum of the Year 2018, has unveiled its 2019-2020 exhibition lineup. From April 26 to September 17, 2019, 'Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition' explores the filmmaker's relationship with UK design, featuring props and archives from Kubrick's estate, including the NASA-designed lens used for candlelit scenes. From February 2 to May 5, 2019, 'David Adjaye: Making Memory' focuses on seven projects by the Ghanaian-British architect, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. and the National Cathedral of Ghana, examining architecture as a narrative device for commemoration. From October 16, 2019, to March 1, 2020, 'Moving to Mars' presents challenges of human settlement on the red planet, featuring real space equipment, soil simulations, and designs by contemporary creators. Concurrently, the museum hosts Beazley Designs of the Year (September 2019–May 2020) across six categories; Design Ventura (November 2018–February 2019) in partnership with Deutsche Bank's Born to Be program; Designers in Residence (March 2019–February 2020) supported by Arts Council England; and the permanent display 'Designer Maker User' with nearly 1,000 20th- and 21st-century design objects. The museum, located in High Street Kensington, was redesigned internally by John Pawson and externally by OMA with Allies and Morrison.
