London Auctions End June 2018: Sotheby's Leads with £110M, Phillips Sold Out

Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction in London achieved £110 million, up 77% from £62 million in 2017, with 98% sold by lot. Top lot was Lucian Freud's Portrait on a White Cover (2002-3) at £22.5 million, a record for the artist in London. Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled (1982) fetched £14.7 million, and David Hockney's Double East Yorkshire sold for over £11 million, up from £3.4 million in 2013. Sam Gilliam set a record with Forth (1967) at £910,000, acquired by an Asian collector. Phillips achieved a sold-out 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale totaling £34.4 million, up 41% from £24 million in 2017. Christie's Post-War to Present sale reached only £12.7 million. Other notable results: Martin Kippenberger's Ohne Titel at £8.4 million, Joan Mitchell's Champs at £3.2 million, Lucio Fontana's Concetto spaziale, Natura at £1.6 million, and records for Henry Taylor, Jennifer Guidi, and Beatriz Milhazes.
