Localworks Expands Cistercian Monastery in Uganda with Clay Brick Buildings

architecture-design · 2026-04-30

Localworks has completed the expansion of Our Lady of Victoria Monastery in Uganda, doubling its size to accommodate a growing community of Cistercian Trappist monks. Originally established in Kenya in 1952, the monastery relocated to Uganda in 2008 after post-election unrest. The project includes four new buildings—Church, Noviciate, Guesthouse, and Gatehouse—arranged around three courtyards and detailed in clay brick. The design team, led by Felix Holland and Marco Cestarolli, worked with local consultants including Dudley Kasibante and Partners and The Landscape Studio. The 2000 m² complex was completed in 2021.
