LOBB Studio Renovates Sert's Brutalist Duplex in Barcelona with Red Microcement and Onyx Marble

LOBB Studio has renovated a ground-floor duplex in Josep Lluís Sert's Les Escales Park in Barcelona's Pedralbes district, preserving the original exposed concrete structure and vaulted slabs while restoring glazed ceramics and introducing red microcement, travertine, natural oak, and a three-meter panel of Onyx Picasso marble. Completed in 1974, Les Escales Park won the FAD Architecture Prize the same year. The renovation reorganized the open-plan ground floor around a sculptural red microcement staircase, referencing Sert's original vestibule color. A lithograph by Joan Miró sits alongside it. Upstairs, bedrooms were adapted to current needs, and a double-height void features the onyx panel. The exterior includes a two-level terrace with restored ceramic tiles, a metal pergola, and Mediterranean planting. Lead designers Roger Bosch and Josep Olm led the project.
