LMCC Opens Permanent Arts Center on Governors Island
On September 19, 2019, the LMCC and the Trust for Governors Island officially opened the LMCC's Arts Center at Governors Island. Located within a historic military base from the 1870s, this center covers over 3,700 square meters and features artist studios, two gallery floors, performance venues, and the island's inaugural indoor café. The renovation was executed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Adamson Associates Architects, and BuroHappold Engineering. Open to visitors from May 1 to October 31, the center also hosts year-round artist residencies. Current exhibitions include Yto Barrada and Bettina's "The Power of Two Suns" and Michael Wang's "Extinct in New York," showcasing four greenhouses with plants once found in New York City. Additionally, a weekly program called "Take Care Series" features various artists and initiatives. Lili Chopra, LMCC's executive artistic programs director, remarked that the center enhances LMCC's ongoing mission to link artists with communities.
