Liz West's H.A.P.P.Y exhibition transforms Mercer Art Gallery with light and color until October 5

exhibition · 2026-04-19

The Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate is currently hosting Liz West's solo exhibition titled H.A.P.P.Y, which will be open until October 5, 2025. This exhibition immerses visitors in a vibrant atmosphere of light and color, reflecting West's personal journey with Seasonal Affective Disorder. A key feature, Our Colour Reflection, showcases 765 mirrored discs in various hues, illuminated by natural light from newly revealed windows. West's artistic approach is influenced by color theory, drawing inspiration from figures like Josef Albers and James Turrell, while also connecting to the legacy of light artists such as Dan Flavin and Olafur Eliasson. The exhibition also presents new paper works, artifacts from Harrogate's museum, and a unique sound piece by Cherry Seraph. Born in 1985, West has gained international recognition and was a finalist for the Aesthetica Art Prize in 2016.
