Living Theatre Archives Relocate to Cilento Village

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Fondazione Morra has moved its extensive Living Theatre archive from Naples to Caggiano, a village in southern Italy's Cilento region. The collection, housed at Palazzo Prospero Morone, comprises 58,812 items including paintings, drawings, diaries, costumes, and set designs from the avant-garde American theatre company, spanning 1969 to 2015. The archive is considered the world's most important repository of Living Theatre documents, complementing holdings at Yale University and the Lincoln Centre in New York. The project also involves the University of Victoria in Canada. The initiative began in summer 2023 with a Vettor Pisani exhibition and aims to create a diffuse museum of contemporary art in the village. Inaugural events from July 13 to 15, 2024, include performances by Alvin Curran and Girolamo De Simone, guided tours by Giuseppe Morra, and talks by Garrick Beck, Allan Antliff, Bibbe Hansen, and Cathy Marchand. The Living Theatre, founded in 1947 by Julian Beck and Judith Malina, revolutionized contemporary theatre by merging art and life.
