Lívia Condurú leads Bienal das Amazônias expansion with itinerant program and floating cultural center
The first Bienal das Amazônias took place in Belém, Pará, from August to November 2023, under the direction of cultural producer Lívia Condurú. This event showcased more than 120 artists from Brazil's Amazon region and other Pan-Amazonian nations. Six months later, the Centro Cultural Bienal das Amazônias (CCBA) was established as a permanent venue. Condurú noted that launching the event involved creating an institution from the ground up, transforming an 8,000-square-meter space in just 43 days. An itinerant program was developed, with plans for an international exhibition in Medellín, Colombia, in July. A mobile cultural center, a floating barge designed by Freddy Mamani, was part of the initiative, which drew around 80,000 visitors, though financial sustainability remains a concern. The curatorial team for the next edition includes Sara Garzón, Mônica Amieva, and Jean da Silva.
