Live soundtrack for Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera in Turin with Adrian Utley

On December 10, 2022, at Sala Cabiria of Cinema Massimo in Turin, musicians Paolo Spaccamonti and Stefano Pilia will perform a live soundtrack to Dziga Vertov's 1929 film Man with a Movie Camera, joined by special guest Adrian Utley, guitarist and co-founder of Portishead. The event is presented by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema as part of the Jazz is Dead OFF Night series. The project originated in 2020 as an improvised score, later refined with fixed cues. A second performance without Utley will take place on December 21 at PARC in Florence. Spaccamonti and Pilia have previously collaborated on soundtracks for silent films, including Mario Camerini's Rotaie (2010) and Greed. Spaccamonti describes his approach as serving the film without betraying its poetics, aiming for a contemporary feel. He contrasts live scoring with studio soundtrack work, noting the former's freedom from compromise.
