Live Coding Festival Coming to Turin During Artissima Art Week

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

In Italy, live coding—an innovative blend of spontaneous electronic music, real-time programming, and video projections—is on the rise. On July 6, 2019, Turin's Bunker will host Algo:ritmi, an event curated by Karin Gavassa and Giorgio Alloatti, showcasing both national and international artists who delve into electronic music, sound, code, and visual arts. Gavassa notes the increasing interest in live coding, particularly in conjunction with coding education for children. This movement originated on February 14, 2004, in Hamburg, giving birth to the online community TOPLAP. Previous events have taken place at the British Library in London and Medialab Prado in Madrid, with backing from the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Council. Renick Bell will perform at the event, and Gavassa is also planning a festival for November 2019 during Turin's art week. The next International Conference on Live Coding is set for the University of Limerick.
