Liu Xiaodong's 'Host' at Lisson Gallery LA Focuses on a Detroit Tattoo Artist

Liu Xiaodong, a renowned Chinese figurative artist, presents his latest solo exhibition titled 'Host' at Lisson Gallery in Los Angeles, focusing exclusively on John Mcintyre, a tattoo artist from Detroit and a member of the medieval reenactment group Knyaz USA. This exhibition, which runs until June 13, 2026, showcases dynamic oil paintings that depict Mcintyre in various settings, including snowy forests during historical medieval battles (HMB), his tattoo studio, and his home life. During his 2025 visit to Detroit, Liu initially aimed to portray multiple locals but ultimately concentrated on Mcintyre, whose involvement in full-contact armored combat since 2019 provides a vivid representation of the city. Notable pieces like 'Snowlight in Detroit' feature Mcintyre alongside fellow combatants in detailed armor, while 'John and His Tattoos' highlights his tattooed skin as a form of protection. A significant canvas also includes a self-portrait of Liu painting outdoors, positioning him as a witness to Detroit's overlooked communities.
