Liu Jie's A Thousand Plateaus Gallery to Present Chen Xiaoyi Solo at LISTE Art Fair

A Thousand Plateaus gallery founder Liu Jie discussed participation strategies for art fairs in an interview with ArtReview. The gallery, established in Chengdu, China in 2007, represents artists including Chen Qiulin, Wang Chua, and Aaajiao. At the 2019 LISTE Art Fair, the gallery will present a solo exhibition by young artist Chen Xiaoyi, whose project originated during a 2018 residency in Switzerland. Liu Jie explained that the gallery participates in 6-8 fairs annually, with occasional peaks like 10 fairs in 2018 across Asia and Europe. Selection criteria include fair quality, compatibility with represented artists, career levels, and budget considerations. Beyond sales, participation aims to introduce emerging artists to broader audiences while updating connections about gallery activities. LISTE Art Fair, founded in 1996, has been supported since 1997 by main partner E.Gutzwiller & Cie, Banquiers, a private bank founded in 1886 by Carl Gutzwiller and still family-owned with headquarters in Basel. Liu Jie noted that Chinese contemporary art's complexity sometimes challenges international understanding, but the gallery strives to present artists' work effectively to diverse audiences.
